Thomas Pheasant, an American interior and furniture designer, is known for incorporating modernity and antique. He designs furniture with a modern flare but anchored in classic design. Pheasant has toured various countries, most recently China, introducing his furniture to new markets.

American interior and furniture designer Thomas Pheasant paid a visit to China recently under the invitation of the American luxury furniture label Baker.

The award-winning designer has been recognized internationally for his interior design and furniture collections.

But Pheasant has not met any Chinese clients in his career. When he was describing a resting chair he created in a small presentation he held in Beijing, he used the world “lounge”, which puzzled most of the Chinese attendees. . . Continue Reading

The majority of Americans are concerned that with health care reform will come a change in their employee offered benefits such as an increase in cost, number of benefits offered being decreased, or employers discontinuing benefits all together. These are very valid concerns especially since a recent survey showed 29% of employers considering discontinuing employee benefits due to the reforms. The survey has given insight to insurance providers as to ways to make plans that will help employers attract and retain employees so employers will continue offering benefits.

As brokers and employers get ready to meet the benefits challenges posed by health care reform, many American workers have concerns about how the reforms will affect their worksite benefits. According to Health Care Reform: The Waiting Is Over, the third in a series of research briefs based on The Prudential Insurance Company of America’s (Prudential’s) Seventh Annual Study of Employee Benefits: Today & Beyond, nearly half (46%) of employees believe it is likely that the cost of health insurance will increase overall and nearly a third (31%) say it’s likely that fewer employers will offer health insurance coverage.

Brokers and employers both anticipate consequences from health care reform, with brokers expecting a larger impact. Both groups agree that benefits funding will be most affected. Among their top concerns, brokers expect the number of employee benefits offered (80%) and benefit communications (78%) to be highly impacted, while employers note benefits service and support (56%), as well as number of benefits offered (55%) as their top concerns.

Seventy-two percent of brokers say that “expertise and thought leadership on health care reform” from insurers is either critical or very helpful. . . Continue Reading

Photographers Capture Moments

There are small differences between the photographs taken by photojournalist and those taken by artistic photographers. Both can be captivating and convey the emotions and stories of the scenes they depict, however one fetches top dollar while the other can be accessed for free. Multiple galleries and news sources in Denver currently have the work of photographers on display and available for view.

Find out about our photo prints on wood.

Read more from Denver Post:

There are ambiguous and sometimes unfair differences between the photojournalism you get from a serious news operation and the documentary photographs you see hanging on the walls in galleries and museums.

One, of course, is their street value. You can get slide shows full of photos from The Denver Post for free, while a good Edward Weston might fetch a million-plus. Another is the way they are printed and presented; separated, framed and stuck strategically to a white wall, or cropped and crammed above an advertisement for teeth implants.

I wouldn’t dare say one is more artful than the other; neither is one more difficult to create. Cindy Sherman may have spent days making herself look like a battered corpse for her famous self-portrait “Untitled #153″ (sale price: $2.7 million at auction ) but Denver Post shooter Joe Amon spent months and risked his safety shooting drug addicts for his 2012 series “Heroin in Denver” (sale price: $0.00 at denverpost.com). Continue reading…

The New Photographer

Jeff Rosenheim is the new head of the photography department at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. One of his goals is to display the work of photographers who approach the medium in new ways. This approach is evident in the instillation currently on display at the Met titled “Street” by James Nares.

https://www.photobarn.com/photo-gifts.html

Read more from NYTimes:

ON a recent wintry afternoon, Jeff Rosenheim, the newly appointed head of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s photography department, stopped in at its special exhibition galleries. He was checking on the installation of a new acquisition: a 61-minute video called “Street,” by the British-born artist James Nares.

As brilliantly colored images splashed across a 16-foot-long screen, teams of art handlers and curators were placing photographs, drawings, sculptures and paintings in adjacent galleries. “This is exactly what we’re trying to do,” Mr. Rosenheim said, “to show photography in the context of many different kinds of art.”

Douglas Eklund, a photography curator who was also on hand for the installation that day, chimed in: “Photography has always been on a long road. But now it’s out of the ghetto.” Continue reading...

War Photography

The newest exhibit on display at the Annenberg Space for Photography in Los Angeles displays a collection of photos that document wars from 1848 to the present. The exhibit covers wars that took place over six continents and show not only the violence but also the quiet moments and lives destroyed. It took curators ten years to complete the show.

Read more from Huffington Post:

WAR/PHOTOGRAPHY, the Annenberg Space for Photography’s newest exhibit, is a harrowing collection of the history of war told through photographs from 1848 to present day.

The project, which spans conflicts in six continents, was ten years in the making. There are images that would be instantly recognizable to most, like the Eddie Adams photo of a police commander killing a Viet Cong operative in 1968, and the iconic image of Old Glory at Iwo Jima in 1945 photographed by Joe Rosenthal.

But the photographs don’t just chronicle violence — they also capture children and civilians; ceremonies and childhood bedrooms of the fallen. It’s these quieter, lesser-known photos that captivate like a new song or a language you’ve never heard spoken. Continue reading…

Flooding causes the most deaths of all the natural disasters and causes more than $1 billion in damages each year in the United States. Floods can happen anywhere even in low risk areas. This week is Flood Safety Awareness Week and the Federal Emergency Management Agency is encouraging everyone to review their emergency plans, check over their supplies and make sure they have the insurance and documentation needed to protect themselves, their family and their property in the event of a flood.

Flood Safety Awareness Week is coming up the week of March 18. After two consecutive years of floods in 2010 and 2011, our community knows full well the effects of flooding, but emergency officials in both Dyer County and the city of Dyersburg encourage everyone to review their plans to ensure that they are ready in the event of flooding.

According to the Division of Homeland Security, floods and flash floods kill more people in the United States than any other natural disaster, accounting for 90 percent of all U.S. natural disasters. Officials estimate that flooding causes more than $1 billion in property damage each year in the United States. The most shocking statistic is that 25 percent of all flood disasters occur in low- to moderate-risk areas for flooding.

Dyer County Fire Chief James Medling says that the best thing residents can do during a flood is to follow the National Weather Service’s motto: ‘Turn around, don’t drown!’ . . . Continue Reading

Keeping our homes a safe place can be a challenge at times. There are some common toxins that can be present in your home and can be of harm to your families such as mold, radon and asbestos. Some mold jobs can often be handled by the homeowner but if it is a larger job or a reoccurring problem a professional should tackle the job. Radon and asbestos are also dangerous and would be best handled by professionals to illuminate the health risks.

Your home should be your safe haven but sometimes your home is a harbor for toxins that could affect you and your family’s health.

A common culprit in many homes is mold.

If you have less than 10 square feet of mold damage, you could tackle removing that yourself, but Rebecca Shopp needed to call in a professional.

“When it first happened I was not as concerned because it was such a small area that got moldy,” she said. “But then when I had it patched and a few months later found mushrooms in the carpet, is when I realized it was a much larger area.” . . . Continue Reading

Hurricane Sandy brought the ocean inside Staten Island homes. Days later the mold was taken over. For those that have asthma, allergies or compromised immune systems mold can trigger attacks. For healthier people mold can still have consequences. If you have medical problems it is best to call in professional to get rid of the mold. For others CUNY’s School of Public Health and the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey is giving training session around the city on how to properly remove mold from homes.

Hurricane Sandy put the ocean in Joe Cosenza’s Staten Island home. Three days after the storm, Cosenza says his walls looked like moldy bread. Immediately, his asthma flared up.

“My chest, my eyes were burning, my nose would burn, I was coughing, wheezing,” recalls Cosenza.

In Mr. Cosenza’s house, the mold was easy to spot, but that’s not always the case.

“An actively growing mold culture has millions of spores, and these spores are seeds that want to repopulate, and they are microscopic,” says Jack Caravanos, Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences Program Director at CUNY School of Public Health. . . Continue Reading

The air inside your home could be up to five times more polluted than the air outside. Cleaning the air inside our homes should be a top priority since we spend so much of our time inside. Houseplants are a critical part of improving indoor air quality. Plants clean up the ambient air as they absorb and process it and holding on to many of the toxins are in the air.

What kind of air are you really breathing at home? Surprising data from the EPA shows that indoor air can be two to five times more polluted than outdoor air. Common pollutants include furnaces, fireplaces, gas stoves and even your vacuum cleaner. With the average American spending as much as 90 percent of their lives indoors, improving air quality should be a priority.

Keeping houseplants is one thing you can do to boost your indoor air quality.

“Plants respire and breathe. They will bring the ambient air into the plant and process it just like you and I do when we breathe,” explains Paul Schnare, owner of Sunny Hill Gardens & Florist. “The thing is, a lot of toxins that may or may not be in the air are then left in the plant. It’s a way to clean the ambient air.” . . . Continue Reading

As a huge storm hit the Northeast this weekend Hurricane Sandy victims worried about what that would mean for their homes. This storm was the colliding of two winter storms, one from the Midwest and a band of rain from the South brining high winds, heavy snow and high tides. Coastal areas did have the potential to flood and residents were told to expect to be snowed in for two days.

A powerful winter storm pounded the Northeast Saturday, with gusting winds and heavy snow causing power failures for hundreds of thousands of people, dozens of accidents and fuel shortages at gas stations.

At least one death was confirmed, a snow-related car accident in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

By 4:20 a.m. ET Saturday, 26 inches of snow had fallen at Hamden, Conn., with 22.4 inches at Upton, N.Y., and 15.3 in Portland, Maine, weather.com reported. New York City’s Central park had 6.3 inches. . . Continue Reading

A woman was fatally shot during a drug deal that went bad. She was involved in the robbery to get marijuana, which led to her death as retaliation. Three brothers are being charged in the case.

http://helpingclients.com/areas-of-practice/bankruptcy/

Read more from the Washington Post:

Prince William County police believe that a “botched drug deal” led a man to arrange for a woman’s slaying in Dumfries, according to documents filed in Prince William County Circuit Court.

Tasheka Lashon Leavell, 35, was found fatally shot in the 17600 block of Washington Street in Dumfries on Jan. 17. Police subsequently arrested brothers Christopher J. Tolliver, 27, of the 1700 block of Washington Street in Dumfries, and Douglas J. Tolliver of the 4000 block of Jonathan Court in Dumfries.

Leavell had allegedly arranged to use Christopher Tolliver’s cellphone to buy marijuana, according to court documents.
A couple made a business of growing and dealing marijuana from their home, then using the money they made to help less fortunate children in Kenya. After six years of leading their double life, the couple has been charged and sentenced to three years in prison. Their vacation home is being sold to pay restitution.

A Little Sutton couple who led a double life handing out much of their drug dealing fortune to African villagers face losing their dream holiday home to pay some of the money back.

Susan Cooper (63) and her partner Michael Foster (62) were each jailed for three years in October after transforming their house (pictured right) into a cannabis factory.

The couple, who moved to Norwich while police investigated the finances and operation of the cannabis farm, regularly flew to Kenya where they used much of their ill gotten gains to help villagers and charities.

References showed the pair were regular donors to the Kwale District Eye Hospital where their cash was used to buy computers. They also paid for children to be put through school and for a life saving operation on a man’s infected leg. Continue reading…

Residents of Sylvan Beach, NY were hit the worst by the area flooding Thursday. Residents say they are used to it, it is a hazard of buying waterfront property. Many of them spent Friday pumping out the garages and basements that had filled with one foot of water and were glad it wasn’t worse.

Many residents in Sylvan Beach were cleaning up their homes Friday and assessing the damage from Thursday’s flooding. While the water may have left many Sylvan Beach neighborhoods, a number of residents spent the day pumping out their garages and basements filled with water.

The homes along Fish Creek were hit the hardest, filled with over a foot of water, almost 30 residents had to be rescued.
A day later, many residents were thankful the ice jam broke when it did.

“It was definitely going to be a can’t stay here kinda deal if it kept coming up,” said John Varacalli of Waterview Drive. “Within an hour it went from raising a dock to all in the driveway.” . . Continue Reading
